At first garter belts were used to keep up the stockings, and that made going to the toilet a bit difficult. Something that was used for practical reasons in the past is now used as a fashion statement and woman use it to look sexy. Stockings are a sexy way to spice up any outfit. Later the stockings were manufactured with elastic bands that made sure the stockings stayed up.
Seamed stockings are stockings where the seams run up the middle of the stocking. Seamed stockings are great for full figures and are used by women who want their legs to look slimmer. Black, or any dark-colored stockings are worn when woman want to look thinner, as dark colors absorb light giving the wearer a thinner look.
Fishnet stockings flatter the legs. A muscular, sleek appearance is created. Fishnet stockings can be worn over solid-colored stockings for a more dramatic effect. Worn with a garter belt a sexy look is created.

In America and Australia stockings can also be pantyhose. The difference between stockings and pantyhose is that pantyhose are like a tight pair of pants (that may be why people in the UK call pantyhose tights). Stockings are like tight socks going up all the way to your thighs.
Pantyhose were invented by a man in 1959 at the request of his wife who found being pregnant and wearing stockings held up by a garter belt a problem. To the delight of woman all over the world pantyhose hit the fashion world, and housewives alike, by storm. Pantyhose are sheer close-fitting leg-wear covering the body from waist to feet. Pantyhose are great at hiding imperfections on women’s legs and are a woman’s best friend when she has not shaved! Pantyhose will never go out of style as it makes the leg and woman more appealing.
Paging through a fashion catalogue, one is amazed to see that pantyhose can be so much more than the black pantyhose I had to wear in my first year at university! Fishnet pantyhose with keyhole back-seam, fishnet crotchless pantyhose, fishnet suspender pantyhose, low rise pantyhose, sheer suspender pantyhose, oval net, thorn net, lurex net and diamond net pantyhose are but a few advertised by sexy models.
During the 1970’s women started to refrain from wearing pantyhose, but models like Twiggy helped to make it high fashion again. Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge is wearing pantyhose completing most of her outfits.
When you look at the difference between pantyhose and stockings the following points can be lifted out:
- Associated use of garters, lace, appliqué and the exposure of thigh make stockings more sexual and attractive than pantyhose.
- Stockings are cleaner, and healthier than pantyhose. Pantyhose create a warm and humid area in the crotch, while stockings provide ventilation.
- In colder weather stockings are better because stockings expose more skin.
- Pantyhose does not require garters and garter belts and leaves a smooth line under form-fitting clothes.
